Audition Announcement! [VIDEO]

The Preventing AIDS through Live Movement and Sound (PALMS) Project is a program of the Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC), a non-profit public health institute involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS since 1987.

The PALMS Project aims to:

Increase knowledge about HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention

Reduce high-risk sexual behaviors by enhancing self-efficacy and negotiation skills for condom use.

Currently, the project specifically targets African American youth and youth living in urban communities, including low income as well out-of-school, court involved, and substance dependant adolescents.

The PALMS Project provides HIV prevention education to adolescents and young adults in community and school-based settings in Philadelphia through improvisational, interactive theatrical performances presented by trained volunteer peer actors.  The performances portray real life situations that adolescents and young adults contend with on a daily basis when faced with negotiating safer sexual behaviors.  Audience participation is one of the unique features of the PALMS Project and the fact that the project limits audiences to small groups of 10-50 participants encourage such participation.

PALMS Acting Troupe

The troupe consists of trained volunteer peer actors between the ages of 18-35 from all walks of life.  The men and women who volunteer come with a personal desire to serve the communities in which they live through teaching young people about HIV/AIDS.  Actors should have exceptional improvisational skills and the ability to portray a characters between16-25 years of age.
Candidates must be personable, professional, articulate, and able to work with difficult-to-reach youth. Knowledge of HIV/AIDS preferred, but not required.

All actors are compensated for each performance to cover costs associated with traveling to and from a performance and to provide an incentive for the time spent at performances.  Additionally, actors are also given a stipend for monthly meetings focusing on HIV/STD prevention education and dramatic skills-building.

In general an actor will have one performance and the monthly meeting, which is mandatory, to attend to each month.  There may be other opportunities to perform based on the schedule of events.
